Bordighera has a rich history. According to historical evidence, fortified Ligurian settlements existed on the hills near the town of Bordighera, dating back to the 5th century BC. During the Roman Imperial era, this area, near the Via Julia Augusta, opened in 13 BC, was an agricultural settlement.

A papal bull of 1296 mentions a place named Burdigueta, under the control of neighboring Ventimiglia. The foundation document, however, dates back only to 1470, when a fortified settlement was established on the hill of Sant'Ampelio. The mild climate during the winter months is due to the area's unique location. The old town, rooted on the promontory of San Ampelio, is separated by Via Romana from the areas urbanized in the 19th and 20th centuries, where villas, elegant residences, and hotels from the early 20th century line one another, almost all in a refined Liberty style. Bordighera is known as the "Queen of Palms," but it's not just palms that grow here, but also olive and citrus trees, and Mediterranean shrubs. The natural environment here is a lush, varied mix of greenery that blends seamlessly with the urban fabric. We recommend visiting the Winter Garden, the 17th-century Church of Santa Maria Magdalena, and the 15th-century Oratory of St. Bartholomew the Apostle. Bordighera's port is the last tourist port before the border with France.
